Anchors

Postby PennyH » Thu Feb 06, 2020 8:18 am

I wonder if anyone can help suggest a way to mount an anchor on the foredeck? Also what is the preferred type of anchor for a Prelude 19? Or is it best just to stow an anchor in the cockpit locker as the original brochure states? Thank you.

Hi your anchor will usually be dictated by where you will be dropping it eg danforth types can be good in mud not so good in rocky bottoms. I use a CQR type lashed to the foredeck with some fittings you can buy and position so your anchor cant move they are a good all rounder. Hope this helps. Mark

Hi, as per the last posting, it depends where you are sailing, and yes have the anchor ready for immediate deployment in the event of an emergency - so on the foredeck attached to its chain or warp and secure but easily released. Keep a sharp knife below decks by the bitter end of tbe warp in case you need to cut it in an emergency (and a marker buoy to attach to the severed warp, if you have time so you return and recover it later ).
You may find the Knox anchor article in the Feb 2020 edition of Practical Boat Owner mag of interest, its design is reputedly lighter, stronger holding and cheaper than some anchors on the market.
Depending on what crime levels are like where you moor it may be prudent to remove it and lock it away until you return to the boat, it would be most annoying to have your anchor stolen when it could one day save your life and your boat from harm. Regards, Alistair.
